Drug Elimination

A- When the drug is eliminated completely in urine (unchanged), the renal elimination rate will be equal to the overall elimination rate.

Renal Elimination

The renal clearance (CLR) is equal to the total body clearance (CLT)

CLR = CLT

B- When the drug is eliminated completely by metabolism, the metabolic rate will be equal to the overall elimination rate.

Metabolism

The metabolic clearance (CLM) is equal to the total body clearance (CLT)

The two situations mentioned above are considered special cases because generally most drugs are excreted through more than one pathway.
