Management of drug therapy

The traditional approach

Difficulties associated with this approach :

- When the drug has life-threatening or irreversible side effects.

- When the drug therapeutic effects or toxic effects are difficult to evaluate.

- When the drug is used for prophylaxis.

These situations require additional monitoring parameters to make sure that the administered dose of the drug is appropriate.

Monitoring of blood drug concentration can be very valuable in guiding and assessing drug therapy, and in protecting against toxicity.
