The total daily dose of aminoglycosides administered once a day has been utilized effectively to treat systemic infections. Administration of larger doses results in higher plasma aminoglycoside concentration and should produce more bactericidal effect. Also, the duration of the bactericidal effect of aminoglycosides extends for a period of time after the plasma conc of aminoglycoside fall below the minimum inhibitory conc. These two factors provides the basis for the rationale of once daily aminoglycoside dosing.
The effectiveness of once daily aminoglycoside dosing in all patients and to treat all infections is yet to be determined.
There is no known optimal maximum and minimum plasma conc when aminoglycosides are administered once daily.
