Drug metabolism

After single IV administration of the parent drug, the metabolite appears in the plasma. The metabolite concentration increases initially, and then decreases.

VERY IMPORTANT: The metabolite is a new chemical entity different from the parent drug. So, the metabolite has its own pharmacokinetic parameters.

The metabolite pharmacokinetic parameters are designated by (m) as subscript after the parameter:

Metabolite CLT : CLT (m)

Metabolite Vd : Vd (m)

Metabolite half life: t1/2 (m)

The pharmacokinetic parameters of the metabolites are usually different from those of the parent drugs.

Metabolite with half life longer that the parent drug half life

Metabolite with half life shorter that the parent drug half life
