The Method of Residuals (cont'd):

a- Plot the plasma concentration-time profile on the semilog scale.

b- Draw the line that represents drug elimination and extrapolate to the y-axis.

Residuals

slope = -ka/2.303

c- Take at least three plasma conc during the absorption phase and determine the corresponding y-coordinate values at the same time on the extrapolated line.

d- Calculate the difference between each of the plasma conc and the corresponding values on the extrapolated line (the differences are equal to the residuals).

e- Plot the residuals versus time. This will be a straight line with slope = -ka/2.303

f- Calculate ka from the slope or from the half life of the absorption process.
